October has been announced as the National Pet CBD Month to raise awareness on the use of CBD for pets and educate pet owners.
There has been a noticeable trend in recent years. People are turning from chemical medicines to more natural options for their health conditions. While this may not be a smart move in some cases, it has been beneficial in so many others.
And at the forefront of this trend is CBD.
Although the Emperor Shen-Nung wrote the first book on the medical benefits of cannabis in 2737 BCE, there has been a long pause in research about this plant until recently. The main reason being the misconceptions people had about it.
Fortunately, those myths were put to rest and people became more accepting of CBD and enjoyed its health benefits. From alleviating pain to helping anxieties, stopping seizures, and even preventing cancer, CBD’s list of benefits goes on and expands with every new research.
This has raised a question among pet owners…can I use CBD for my pets? The short answer is yes. You can use CBD for your pets.
The long answer…
Well, that’s why October was named as National Pet CBD Month!
What is National Pet CBD Month all about?
Right around the time when the 2018 Farm Bill legalized extraction of hemp products, cbdMD announced October as the National Pet CBD Month. The goal was to dedicate a whole month to raise awareness on the use of CBD for pets and educate pet owners on everything they needed to know about it.
Your pets might be suffering from problems related to aging, anxiety, and other conditions. While your first move should always be a visit to the vet, CBD can help on the side. Without any serious side effects on animals, CBD can be a natural replacement for chemical drugs and bring some comfort.
But as concerned pet owners ourselves, we know you might be doubtful about using CBD for your pets. And you have the right to be. You don’t want to give them something that might hurt them and make their suffering worse. So we are going to tell you everything you need to know about using CBD for your pets.
How does CBD work?
Let’s take a quick look at CBD and where it comes from.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a component of the Cannabis plant. The other component is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is a psychoactive agent. The Cannabis plant has two main species: Marijuana and Hemp. One high in THC and the other high in CBD. One gets you high, the other has health benefits.
Wanna guess which one is which?
You guessed it right. Hemp is the one high in CBD and all the CBD products are extracted from hemp with less than 0.3% THC in them. So no, you and your pets can’t get high on CBD. The extracted CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which exists in all mammalians. ECS is responsible for different things like pain, sleep, immune functions, and anxiety, and through that, CBD can work its magic.
What kind of CBD should I give to my pets?
There are three types of CBD products out there:
- CBD Isolates, which are >99% pure CBD and don’t contain THC;
- Broad-Spectrum CBDs, which contain flavonoids, terpenes, and other components, but still no THC;
- Full-Spectrum CBDs, which contain up to 0.3% THC.
While it’s completely safe for humans to use any of these CBD products, it is highly toxic for animals to use products with THC in them. So that’s a solid no to full-spectrum and a better not to broad-spectrum, because of the other compounds that it has. It’s best to stick with CBD isolates with zero-THC when it comes to your pets, to make sure you’re not giving them anything that might be harmful.
This is the first and most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a CBD product for your pets. There have been cases of pets overdosing on the wrong type of CBD products, so be cautious and read the labels carefully before you buy anything. As long as you do that, your pets can enjoy the benefits of CBD as well.
How can CBD help my pets?
Your pets can get all the benefits of CBD that you get. A list of conditions that CBD can help includes:
- Anxiety and stress,
- Sleep disorders,
- Pain and inflammation,
- Appetite issues
- Skin irregularities,
- And even cancer.
While we have covered all of these in dogs in another article, the same benefits apply to cats with more focus on the calming effects. Cats can get stressed easily by changes in their environment, including house renovations or bringing new pets. This can turn into behavioral problems and anxiety, and CBD is a great solution for that.
You might be surprised to know that besides dogs and cats, CBD can help other animals too. With most studies being done on mice, CBD can be good for your hamsters. Some people have even used it on their guinea pigs and horses with great results. Like we said, CBD affects the endocannabinoid system, and since all mammals have this system, it can be good for all of them.
How do I administer CBD to my pets?
The best way is to place the product directly into your pets’ mouths. If you’re using CBD oils, you can take the dropper and squeeze out the product near the back of their mouths, without gagging them.
Since your pets won’t probably cooperate and stand still for you to do this, there are some other clever ways to give them the CBD. You can mix it with something delicious like peanut butter or put it in their food.
There are even some recipes out there to make treats with CBD oil. Check out these homemade CBD oil dog treats recipes.
Whichever way you choose to do it, make sure to give them the recommended dosage on the bottle and start small so they can get used to it.
